Role of Muscle in Gait Cycle

LETS READ ON ROLE OF MUSCLES IN GAIT CYCLE –
1 HIP EXTENSORS – G MAX
I – In late swing –

A ) concentric contractions to rotate the thigh posteriorly
B ) preparation of weight bearing in stance phase
II – In early stance
concentric and isometric to control hip and knee flexion and to stabilise the limb
2 HIP FLEXORS – ILIOPSOAS
I – In late stance phase
Eccentric contraction to slow and control posterior rotation of the thigh
II – swing phase
Concentric contraction to initiate hip flexion and to accelerate the swing limb forward
3 KNEE EXTENSORS ( QUADRICEPS )
I – Initial contact and Loading response –
Eccentric contractions to control knee flexion and buckling
II – late stance and early swing phase –
Eccentric contraction to control collapse of the knee
4 KNEE FLEXORS ( SEMI T , M , GRACILIS )
I – Early and Midswing phase –
A ) Concentric contractions in swing phase to produce knee flexion
B ) Facilitates foot clearance in swing phase
II Late swing phase and Early stance phase
eccentric contraction and isometric contractions to control knee extension and stabilise the limb before weight bearing
5 ANKLE DORSIFLEXORS ( Tibialis ant , EHL and EDL ) –
A ) Early stance phase –
Eccentric contractions to control ankle plantarflexion in loading response
B ) Swing phase –
Concentric contraction to facilitate limb clearance ( v imp )
6 – ANKLE PLANTARFLEXORS ( GASTRO SOLEUS , PLANTARIS , TIB POST , FHL , FDL , FIBULARIS LONGUS AND BREVIS )
I – In midstance phase
Eccentric contraction to control the ankle dorsiflexion movement and to prevent excessive forward rotation of tibia
II – Terminal stance and preswing –
Concentric contraction for push off and acceleration of swing limb
