NPGH Global Health Fellows Program
The NPGH Global Health Fellows Program offers 12-month mentored clinical research training experiences in one of nine collaborating low- and middle-income countries for post-doctoral trainees and doctoral students in the health professions who are either U.S. citizens or citizens of our collaborating countries. The program is sponsored by the National Institutes of Health’s Fogarty International Center (FIC) along with several NIH Institutes and Offices and is a partnership between the Universities of Washington, Hawai’i, Michigan, Minnesota, and Indiana University and international partners in Cameroon, Ghana, India, Kenya, Liberia, Nepal, Peru, Thailand, and Uganda.
The Fellowship begins with an intensive orientation at the NIH in July and trainees receive a competitive stipend, research funds, are supported by a team of mentors, and US trainees receive travel to and from their research site and health insurance. Research opportunities are available in a variety of disciplines including and not limited to infectious diseases (HIV, malaria, tuberculosis, herpes viruses, HPV, HTLV), key non-communicable and chronic health problems (pulmonary and cardiovascular disease, child development and mental health, women’s health, genetics, cancer, and nutrition), trauma/surgery/emergency medicine, environmental (built environment, tobacco use, lead toxicity, slum upgrading), policy, nursing, oral health, engineering and implementation science.
