Following drugs are HIV Drugs Used for Coronavirus Treatment

Lopinavir/Ritonavir

The combination of drug Lopinavir and Ritonavir is sold under the brand name Kaletra, which was approved in the United States in 2000 to treat HIV infections.  lopinavir specifically to inhibit the protease of the HIV virus which is an important enzyme that cleaves a long protein chain into peptides during the assembly of new viruses.

Lopinavir is a Protease inhibitor and is believed to act on the intracellular processes of corona replica Lopinavir is quickly broken down in the human body by our own protease enzymes so there is low levels of ritonavir is given and another protease inhibitor is added to have a synergistic effect. So, although the drugs lopinavir, approved for the treatment of HIV infection, ritonavir is used for the treatment of MERS and SARS coronaviruses.

These Drugs demonstrated efficacy in marmosets infected with MERS Virus and  reduced mortality in the non-human primates (NHP) model of the MERS

Lopinavir or ritonavir in combination with ribavirin also showed reduced fatality rate and milder disease course during an open clinical trial in patients in the 2003 SARS outbreak.

The first trial with COVD-19 was not so much encouraging, however.  In china 199 corona infected patients were given two pills of lopinavir/ritonavir twice a day plus standard care, or standard care alone therapy.

The drug is generally safe but it may interact with other concomitant drugs usually given to severely ill patients, and also it has been warned it could cause significant liver damage in those sorts of patients.

Lopimune is a combination of protease inhibitors Lopinavir and Ritonavir, which is planning for the treatment of coronavirus by CIPLA. LOPIMUNE  is available in packs of 60 tablets each, containing 200mg of Lopinavir and 50mg of Ritonavir.

PREZCOBIX® (darunavir/cobicistat)

Prezcobix is an HIV medication that contains darunavir/cobicistat for use in research activities aimed at finding a treatment for COVID-19. by Johnson & Johnson. Darunavir as potentially having antiviral activity against COVID-19 is a protease inhibitor.  This drug is currently approved only for use with a boosting agent, and in combination with other antiretrovirals, for the treatment of HIV-1. by Janssen.

Janssen recently has no clinical data to support the use in treatment for  COVID-19. This drug is in the process o evaluation in vitro for any potential activity against the coronavirus. This company has partnered with the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) for the development of a COVID-19 treatment.

Ritonavir/lopinavir and interferon-beta

Ritonavir/lopinavir and interferon-beta combination medicine as the two antivirals with interferon-beta, has shown an effect in marmosets infected with MERS. These three drugs combination is now being tested in MERS patients in Saudi Arabia in the first randomized controlled trial for that disease. But the use of this interferon-beta in combination with ritonavir and lopinavir on patients with severe COVID-19 might be risky, Herold says.
