What is middle back pain or mid back pain?

The middle back pain takes place below the neck and above the bottom of the rib cage in an area that is known as the thoracic spine. There are 12 back bines which are T1 TO T12 vertebrae which are located in this area. And,  disks are located between them.

The spinal columns guard the spinal cord. The spinal cord is a long bundle of nerves that allows the brain to communicate with the rest of the body. There are various ways of the bones, muscles, and ligament and also disks in the spine that can irritate or injure the nerves which can eventually lead to back pain or the middle back pain or mid back pain

Some of the signs and symptoms of mid back pain or middle back pain include the following;

  • Muscle aches
  • Dull pain
  • A burning sensation
  • Sharp or stabbing pain
  • Muscle tightness or stiffness
  • Other more serious symptoms may include:
  • Tingling or numbness in the legs, arms, or chest

Similarly, the muscles and ligaments that are there in the back might have to work hard for keeping the balance when we slouch. if these muscles and ligaments are overworked then this can eventually cause aches and middle back pain or mid back pain.

One meta-analysis of 95 studies on weight and lower back pain also showed a positive correlation between obesity and back pain. When weight increases, so do the risk of back pain.

  1. Muscle sprain or strain

A sprain can be called the tearing or stretching of the ligaments. Strains are the tearing or stretching of the muscles and the tendons. if the patient lift heavy objects regularly with the improper form then this can easily cause the person to sprain or strain their back which can lead to middle back pain or mid back pain

  1. Fall or another injury

The middle back is less likely to experience an injury than the cervical spine (neck) and lumbar spine (lower back). This is because it’s more structured and rigid. However, it’s still possible to injure the middle back. These injuries most often occur as the result of:

  • A hard fall, like down the stairs or from a height
  • A car accident
  • Blunt force trauma
  • Sports accident

This condition called herniated disk takes place whenever the inner, gel-like core of a disk in the back pushes against the outer ring of the cartilage that can put pressure on a nerve. Herniated disks are commonly referred to as slipped disks or ruptured disks.

This pressure on the nerve can result in pain, tingling, or numbness in the middle back and in areas where the affected nerve travels, such as the legs.

The older a person is, the more likely they are to experience back pain.

  1. Fractures

Vertebrae fractures often take place following trauma, such as a fall, car accident, or sports injury. Fractures are also more likely in people with reduced bone density, such as people with OA.

Various methods can be done at home for treating middle back pain or mid back pain.

  • Avoid slouching.
  • Keep your shoulders back when standing.
  • Take standing breaks if you sit for long periods.
  • If you have a desk job, adjusting your chair and computer monitor height, keyboard, and mouse positioning can all enable good posture.
